Fire Prevention Assembly at Franklin Elementary School
Fri. Oct 11th 2019

Today the members of Smock Volunteer Fire Department along with Flatwoods Fire Department hosted Fire Prevention at Franklin Elementary School.  Students learned about preventing fires, the need to learn escape routes with a meeting place, and the importance of smoke detectors.  The students participated in hands-on activities such as practicing Stop, Drop, and Roll, trying on fire fighting bunker gear, and learning about fire extinguishers.  Also, the students had the privilege to tour Allegheny Health Network’s LifeFlight helicopter.

Each student was given a smoke detector provided to them by Junior Firefighter Josh Radovich from New Salem Volunteer Fire Department.  In memory of a fallen firefighter, Josh took it upon himself to raise money through donations to provide every student at Menallen Elementary School a smoke detector.  Menallen Elementary School sits in New Salem’s fire district.  Besides raising the money to reach his goal, Josh exceeded his goal raising enough money to provide smoke detectors to students beyond Menallen Elementary School.

We would like to thank Josh and the members of New Salem Volunteer Fire Department for their gratitude and AHN LifeFlight for their time showing the students their helicopter.
